Three photo mosaic apps compared

Nathan Willis (Linux.com) compares three Linux-based utilities for generating photo mosaics – Pixelize, Metapixel, and Imosaic. It is hard to pick a best program from among the three apps – he concludes. Metapixel offers many mosaic creation options, but it lacks a graphical interface.

Quotation.Photo mosaics are recreations of one large image composed of tiny tiles of other smaller images. They can be a fun project and make good use of the hundreds of less-than-extraordinary photos on your hard drive.

How to publish photos to Flickr using KDE and KFlickr?

kFlickr is a standalone Flickr uploader for KDE. It allows for easy upload of photos with drag and drop from other applications (Konqueror). kFlickr also edits common attributes (title, description, privacy, tags) before sending the photo. Multiple users and batch editing of photos are supported.

This tutorial describes how to configure KFlickr and to start sending your photos. I assume that you’ve got your own Flickr account.

Turning people into stone, using The GIMP

Here’s the 26-step tutorial which describes how to… turn somebody into stone. The GIMP will be needed, and an image that shows a person that you want to turn into stone.

Quotation. It is a very very hard thing to turn people to stone and make it look real. Not every picture can be used and there is a lot of fine-tuning necessary. If the effect is not working well just give it a new title: “Turning people into a zombie” ;)

A ultimate list of GIMP plugins

techZilo lists Top 40+ GIMP plugins. Some of my favourites were also included:

DeNoise – Noise reduction plugin using a modified Gaussian blur algorithm.

DustCleaner – Detect and remove the dust spots in digital image.

Colour saturation – Change the color saturation of your image.

Quotation.Much like Firefox, GIMP’s strength lies in its plugins, which are developed by the open-source toting community. Since the users themselves develop them, they know all the needs and conceive a plugin for everything (well, except making a coffee for you ;) ).

7 Alternatives to Flickr

Photography Bay posts an interesting article on community web sites allowing to share photos for free. Read that article here.

Some limitations of Flickr are also pointed out:

Quotation. There are some limitations to Fickr’s free accounts that detract from its usefulness. When you have a free Flickr account, you can upload 100MB worth of photos each calendar month. This is a bandwidth limit, and not an amount of space that you have on Flickr servers. Flickr also allows you to create sets for photos from a particular event or just photos that you want grouped together.
